Baidu’s “Unlimited OCR” Breakthrough: Processing Dozens of Document Pages in One Pass

Baidu researchers have introduced “Unlimited OCR,” a ground-breaking AI model designed to process dozens of document pages in a single inference pass. This development marks a substantial improvement over existing OCR systems, which typically struggle beyond ten pages in one go. The Challenge of Long Document Processing

Traditional end-to-end OCR systems often encounter a bottleneck with the KV cache, a buffer where language models store previously processed tokens. This buffer grows linearly with the length of the text, leading to increased memory consumption and slower processing times. Current solutions involve processing documents page by page, resetting the cache after each step, which is inefficient for lengthy documents. Baidu’s approach tackles this by drawing an analogy to human memory, where older information gradually fades, allowing focus on current data.

Mimicking Human Forgetting with R-SWA

Unlimited OCR achieves its efficiency through “Reference Sliding Window Attention” (R-SWA). This mechanism allows each generated token to access all reference tokens, visual image tokens, and the initial prompt. Crucially, when consulting previously generated output, it only reviews the last 128 tokens. This maintains a constant KV cache size throughout the entire process, preventing the linear growth in memory use seen in conventional systems. R-SWA also ensures visual tokens remain unchanged after initial encoding, preventing degradation of recognition accuracy.
