Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings, released this week, show Google Search & Other revenue reaching $63.27 billion, a 17% year-over-year increase. The figures are detailed, comparable, and independently verifiable from securities filings. Yet the same quarter produced only vague, unverifiable claims about the number of clicks Google sends to websites — a gap that directly affects publishers, SEO professionals, and digital marketers in India who rely on organic traffic for revenue.

The revenue side of the report is precise. Alphabet provided a clear time series: Search & Other growth accelerated from 10% in Q1 2025 to 12%, 15%, 17%, and 19% in Q1 2026, before easing to 17% this quarter. The deceleration is the first after four consecutive quarters of accelerating growth. CEO Sundar Pichai attributed the growth to “popular AI features driving Search query growth,” while Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler highlighted retail, finance, technology, media, and entertainment as leading verticals, crediting Gemini integration within Google’s advertising systems. However, Google did not specify the exact contribution of each vertical.

At the same time, capital expenditures drove negative free cash flow for the quarter, as covered in earlier reports. The financial disclosures are thorough, but they do not answer the most pressing question for site owners: how many clicks are actually arriving from Google Search, and how many of those come from AI-powered surfaces?

Google’s public statements about website traffic fall into three categories, none of which provide verifiable data.

Contexto

Usage claims: Pichai stated in April that “queries are at an all-time high” and repeated the link between query growth and AI features in the Q2 release. Nick Fox, senior vice president of Knowledge and Information, noted that Search reached its highest usage on record during a World Cup match. These statements highlight superlatives without specific counts, and more queries do not necessarily mean more clicks leaving Google.

Volume claims: Fox shared in a July LinkedIn post that AI features in Search send billions of clicks to websites weekly, and separately mentioned that Google continues to send billions of clicks daily overall. Both numbers use the ambiguous “billions” without exact figures, making it impossible to compare weekly and daily figures or to isolate AI-related clicks from total Search traffic.

Quality claims: Liz Reid, Google’s head of Search, stated in an August 2025 blog post that AI Overviews mainly remove “bounce clicks” — visits where users quickly find a fact and leave. She claimed that total organic click volume has been “relatively stable” year-over-year, with an increase in average click quality. Reid defines quality clicks as visits where users do not swiftly return to the results page. However, the statements lack a published baseline or measurement methodology, and Google has not provided site-level click reporting for AI features.

Independent data from third-party sources provides partial context, though each dataset has limitations. Seer Interactive’s analysis found that organic click-through rate (CTR) for queries with AI Overviews dropped from 1.76% in 2024 to 0.61% in 2025. Pew Research Center reported that users clicked results 8% of the time when AI Overviews appeared, compared to 15% without them. Seer notes that AI Overview queries tend to be informational, which naturally have lower CTRs. Advanced Web Ranking’s Q1 data showed CTR improvements for the top five desktop positions but declines for the top mobile position, without isolating AI Overview queries. Referral traffic from Gemini increased after the Gemini 3 releases, according to SE Ranking, but that measures a different product. A Similarweb report found that brands recommended by ChatGPT answers were 2.5 times more likely to receive a site visit within a week, with 55.9% of that traffic coming from branded searches.

For Indian publishers and SEO professionals, the lack of transparent click data makes it difficult to assess the true impact of AI Overviews and AI Mode on organic traffic. Google’s Search Console generative AI reports show impressions without clicks, including details by page, country, and device type, but no click-through rates. Without verifiable, site-level data, businesses cannot reliably attribute traffic changes to specific Google features or plan their SEO strategies accordingly.

The gap between financial precision and traffic opacity is not new, but it has widened as AI features become more central to Search. Until Google provides comparable data on clicks — broken down by traditional results, AI Overviews, and AI Mode — publishers will have to rely on fragmented third-party studies and cautious interpretation of executive statements.
