YouTube’s contribution to the U.S. economy reached $60 billion in 2025, supporting over 540,000 full-time equivalent jobs, according to a report released by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan and researched by Oxford Economics. The same report found that every U.S. state now has at least 10 channels pulling more than 1 million monthly views. Yet the SEO and content marketing industry, which has spent two decades prioritising text-based content and backlink profiles, is only now waking up to the platform’s role in AI-driven search.

Why this matters for Indian marketers and content teams: YouTube videos are surfacing inside Google’s AI Overviews with increasing frequency, often as the primary cited answer rather than a supplementary link. The gap between what a video earns on YouTube and what it triggers elsewhere — traffic, AI citations, conversions — is the same gap that existed in 2006, but the stakes are now far larger.

The $60 billion YouTube economy

Mohan posted the 2025 U.S. Impact Report last week, built on research from Oxford Economics. Key numbers include:

  • YouTube’s creative ecosystem contributed more than $60 billion to U.S. GDP in 2025.
  • The platform supported over 540,000 full-time equivalent jobs.
  • Every state has at least 10 channels with more than 1 million monthly views.
  • 76% of small- and medium-sized businesses with a YouTube channel say the platform helped them grow their customer base by reaching new audiences.

The last figure, published by YouTube’s Alexandra Veitch, underscores that YouTube is not merely a video library — it is a distribution channel that most marketing departments never built.

AI Overviews and YouTube citations

Google’s AI Overviews, which generate conversational answers to search queries, increasingly pull from YouTube videos. Greg Jarboe, president and co-founder of SEO-PR and a 20-year YouTube marketing veteran, notes that the platform your department may have deprioritised for years is becoming one of the more reliable ways to get cited inside the answer engines reshaping search.

“YouTube videos are surfacing inside AI Overviews with increasing frequency, often as the primary cited answer rather than a supplementary link,” Jarboe writes in Search Engine Journal.

This shift means that brands without a YouTube presence, or without partnerships with established creators, are missing citations that AI systems trust. The impact is not limited to the U.S. — Indian search users increasingly encounter AI Overviews in Hindi and English, and YouTube is the dominant video platform in India.

The creator partnership gap

Jarboe argues that building an in-house YouTube presence from scratch in 2026 is slow, expensive, and likely the wrong first move for most brands. The faster path runs through the 540,000 full-time creators the Oxford Economics research already counted.

“Somewhere in that number is a creator who already has the audience, the production skill, and the credibility inside your product category that your department spent 20 years not building,” he says.

Marketers need to do three things:

Identify creators who already own the audience and credibility in their product category.
2. Move quickly to negotiate real partnerships before competitors do.
3. Stop treating influencer marketing as a separate line item from SEO and content strategy.

What Indian marketers should do

For Indian businesses, the lesson is direct. YouTube India has over 500 million monthly active users. Indian creators are among the fastest-growing on the platform. Yet most SEO and digital marketing teams in the country still treat YouTube as a nice-to-have side channel, not a core part of AI search strategy.

The agencies and in-house teams that treat influencer marketing as a separate budget from SEO are going to keep losing ground in an AI search environment that doesn’t care which budget produced the video — only whether it earned the citation.

The right question is no longer whether your brand needs a YouTube strategy. It is which creators already own the audience and credibility your department was supposed to build, and how fast you can get a real partnership in place before a competitor gets there first.
