Anthropic has expanded Claude’s voice mode to run on its most capable models, Opus and Sonnet, instead of being limited to the smaller Haiku. The upgrade is now available across the mobile app, desktop app and web chat, allowing users to switch models mid-conversation. The feature also gains access to connected tools such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack, enabling Claude to compose and send emails entirely by voice. This gives Anthropic a lead in tool integration among voice-enabled AI assistants, even as competitors like OpenAI and Google offer more natural-sounding speech.

Voice Mode Upgrades to Opus and Sonnet

Previously, Claude’s voice mode relied on the lightweight Haiku model, which was faster but less capable for complex tasks. With the addition of Opus and Sonnet, users can now choose a model that better handles reasoning, context and multi-step instructions. The model can be changed during a conversation, and the system supports eleven languages. Anthropic says the voice mode is turn-based, meaning Claude waits for the user to finish speaking before responding, unlike OpenAI’s GPT-Live which uses full-duplex audio that allows simultaneous speaking and listening. Google’s Gemini Live also uses a turn-based approach but is limited to smartphones.

Tool Integration: Composing Emails by Voice

The standout feature of the updated voice mode is its ability to read from and write to connected services. Claude can access Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack through the user’s authorised account, and can draft, compose and send an email using only voice commands. No other AI assistant currently offers this level of direct action from audio mode. OpenAI’s ChatGPT can work with external tools but requires the user to switch to text or use a separate interface. Google’s Gemini Live can search the web but does not yet send emails or access calendar events in the same way. For Indian users who rely on email and messaging for business, this could reduce the friction of typing while on the move.

How Claude Compares with OpenAI and Google

In terms of voice quality, both OpenAI and Google are ahead. Their speech synthesis and recognition feel more natural, with better pacing, intonation and the ability to handle interruptions. Claude’s voice output, while functional, can sound robotic in comparison. However, when it comes to task completion, Claude’s tool integration gives it an edge. The table below summarises the key differences.

Key facts Claude (Anthropic) OpenAI GPT-Live Google Gemini Live
Models used Opus, Sonnet, Haiku GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini Gemini 1.5 Pro, Flash
Audio mode Turn-based Full-duplex Turn-based
Email composition Yes, send directly via voice No direct voice email No
Workspace integration Gmail, Calendar, Slack Limited to plugins Basic web search
Platform availability Mobile, desktop, web Mobile, desktop, web Smartphones only

Implications for Indian Users

For Indian professionals, students and creators who use voice assistants for productivity, the ability to manage emails and calendar entries hands-free is a practical improvement. The tool integration works with services that are widely used in India, such as Gmail and Google Calendar. However, Claude’s voice mode is only available in English and a few other languages — Hindi and regional Indian languages are not yet supported. This limits its usefulness for users who prefer voice commands in their native tongue. OpenAI and Google have broader multilingual support, but neither offers the same level of direct action. The upgrade also means that tasks like scheduling a meeting, sending a follow-up email or checking Slack messages can be done without touching the keyboard.

What to Watch For

Anthropic has not disclosed whether the voice mode will expand to more Indian languages or if it will add full-duplex audio in future updates. The company is likely to focus on improving speech naturalness and expanding the list of supported tools. For now, the move positions Claude as a strong option for users who want to automate email and calendar tasks by voice, even if the conversational experience is less polished than rivals. The pricing structure remains unchanged: users on the free tier get limited access, while Claude Pro and Team subscribers can use Opus and Sonnet more extensively.
