Google Cloud has become the first major cloud provider to offer models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and its own Gemini family on a single platform. The move, announced today, brings three OpenAI models to Google Cloud as a private preview for select enterprise customers.

The development marks a significant shift in the cloud AI landscape. Until now, enterprises had to work with separate providers to access the full range of leading AI models. Google Cloud’s decision to host its biggest rival’s models on its own infrastructure signals a strategic bet on platform convenience over model exclusivity.

What’s available and how it works

Three OpenAI models are available starting today. GPT-6 Astra is positioned for demanding tasks such as coding and complex research. GPT-6.1 Sol offers a cheaper alternative with similar performance characteristics. GPT-6 Luna is designed as a fast, cost-efficient option for everyday inference workloads.

Enterprise customers can sign up for the private preview now. The models will also appear in Gemini for Business and Google Antigravity, Google’s experimental AI platform. All usage charges run through a single Google Cloud bill and count toward existing enterprise contracts. Google has stated that customer data will not be used for training.

The launch covers only the GPT-6 series for now. It is unclear whether older OpenAI models or future releases will follow the same path.

A strategic pivot for Google Cloud

The decision reflects a broader trend in enterprise AI procurement. Companies increasingly want to avoid vendor lock-in and compare model performance on their own workloads. By offering multiple model families in one place, Google Cloud simplifies procurement, billing, and compliance for its enterprise customers.

For Indian enterprises and startups already using Google Cloud for their AI workloads, this means they can now experiment with OpenAI models without setting up a separate AWS or Azure account. Billing consolidation and contract portability reduce administrative overhead, which is especially relevant for cost-conscious Indian SaaS companies and AI startups.

The move also puts pressure on AWS and Azure to respond. Neither major competitor currently offers all three leading model families on a single platform. AWS has its own Bedrock service with multiple models, but does not host OpenAI. Azure has a deep partnership with OpenAI but does not offer Anthropic’s Claude natively.

Internal tensions at Google

The announcement highlights a recurring tension within Google. Compute capacity spent serving cloud customers strengthens the biggest rivals of its own Gemini team. This resource conflict reportedly played a role in the departure of two-billion-dollar researcher Noam Shazeer, who returned to OpenAI earlier this year.

Google Cloud’s leadership has clearly decided that the revenue from hosting rival models outweighs the competitive risk to its own AI division. For Indian enterprises evaluating cloud providers, this signals that Google Cloud is prioritising customer flexibility over internal model promotion.

What this means for Indian enterprises

Indian AI startups and enterprise teams can now evaluate GPT-6, Claude, and Gemini side by side on the same infrastructure. This reduces the friction of multi-cloud management and simplifies compliance with data localisation requirements, since all processing stays within Google Cloud’s India regions.

The private preview structure means early access will likely go to larger enterprises first. Smaller teams may need to wait for general availability, which has not been announced. Pricing details for the OpenAI models on Google Cloud have also not been disclosed.
