Hyundai India CEO shares spotlight with Shah Rukh Khan in new campaign
Que paso
For almost three decades, Shah Rukh Khan has been synonymous with Hyundai in India. But the brand's latest campaign introduces another familiar face to the story: Tarun Garg, chief executive officer, Hyundai Motor India.
The film opens with Khan arriving in his Hyundai Creta before company officials take the vehicle away, saying it no longer has approval. Confused, the actor calls Garg, who casually tells him that Hyundai is undergoing a "change in leadership". For a moment, Khan believes he is being replaced as the brand ambassador.
The misunderstanding soon unfolds into a series of playful exchanges. Tarun reassures him with the iconic line, "Main hoon na", borrowing from Khan's 2004 film, to which the actor quips, "Haan, lekin main bhi toh hoon na."
The punchline arrives in the next scene, when a Hyundai team member drives in with the brand's new all-electric SUV and hands over the keys to Khan, saying, "This is your new car." It becomes clear that the "change" referred to Hyundai's evolving product lineup, not its long-standing association with the actor.
The campaign closes with Garg welcoming Khan back before the actor says, "The last 30 years were great," to which Tarun replies, "The next 30 years will be epic."
While celebrity endorsements have long been central to automotive advertising, CEOs have typically remained behind the scenes. Hyundai's latest campaign brings the company's top executive into the spotlight, using him not as a corporate spokesperson but as an active participant in the storytelling.
The approach mirrors a broader trend across industries where business leaders are becoming more visible in brand communication. Companies such as boAt have frequently featured co-founder Aman Gupta in campaigns, while Lenskart has done the same with Peyush Bansal.
Founders at digital-first brands including Mamaearth and Zomato have also increasingly stepped into public-facing roles, helping humanise their brands beyond traditional advertising.
For legacy companies, however, such appearances remain relatively uncommon, particularly in sectors such as automobiles, where communication has historically revolved around vehicle performance, technology and celebrity ambassadors.
