In August 2024, Google expanded its AI Overviews — previously known as the Search Generative Experience — to India, along with the UK, Japan and several other markets. For the first time, millions of Indian users searching for queries like “how to start a business in India” or “best budget smartphones 2024” see a block of AI-generated text before any organic link. The change is not cosmetic. It shifts the economics of search visibility, especially for the small-to-medium businesses, agencies and creators who rely on Google organic traffic.

This column is not a prediction. It draws on official Google announcements, early data from US markets, and analysis from Indian tech media to outline what concretely changes for Indian marketers and what steps are worth testing now.

Why AI Overviews Matter for Indian Marketers

India is one of the largest search markets by volume, and Google’s share of that market is dominant. AI Overviews replace the traditional featured snippet with a longer, multi-source summary. For a user, the answer appears immediately, often without needing to click any link. Early data from the US rollout, reported by Search Engine Land, showed that overall click-through rates for informational queries dropped by 20–30% for sites that previously held the featured snippet position. While India’s search behaviour differs — more mobile-first, more voice queries — the structural risk is the same: if your content is used to generate the overview, you may still get a citation link, but the user may never leave the search results page.

For Indian SEO practitioners, the immediate question is not whether AI Overviews are good or bad. It is: what kind of content gets selected, how can we signal relevance, and what traffic changes should we monitor?

What the Official Sources Show

Google’s official blog post on the expansion (May 2024) and the subsequent Search Central guidance (August 2024) clarify a few points. AI Overviews are generated when the system determines that a search query benefits from a synthesis of multiple sources. The selection is based on the same ranking signals used for organic search — relevance, authority, experience, trustworthiness — but prioritises content that directly answers the query in a concise, structured way.

Google also emphasised that AI Overviews will only appear for queries where the system has high confidence. This means that many commercial, transactional and local “near me” queries still show traditional results. However, the boundary is porous. Queries like “best SEO tools for small business” have already triggered AI Overviews in Indian tests.

An official Google documentation page on structured data confirms that using the `FAQPage` and `HowTo` schemas increases the chance of being used in AI Overviews, though not all cited pages use them. This is a concrete signal worth acting on.

Workflow Impact: Shift from Snippet Hunting to Authoritative Summaries

The traditional SEO playbook for Indian content teams often centred on targeting featured snippets — short, direct answers formatted as lists, tables or paragraphs. AI Overviews change the reward structure. Instead of a 50-word snippet, Google now synthesises 150–300 words from multiple sources, often citing three to five domains. The winning source is not the one with the shortest answer, but the one whose content is most comprehensive, well-structured and trusted by Google’s ranking system.

This means Indian content creators should:

  • Write in-depth, structured answers around core questions, not just one-liners.
  • Use clear heading hierarchies (H2, H3) that mirror the user’s question progression.
  • Include authoritative citations and data points, especially from Indian government or institutional sources.
  • Avoid generic filler; every paragraph should add distinct information.

Furthermore, for product or service pages, the use of structured data becomes more important. Google’s own guidelines recommend `Product` schema for reviews and pricing, and `Article` with `headline` and `description` for news and analysis.

Limits and Counterarguments

AI Overviews are not a finished product. In the US, early examples of hallucinations — Google recommending putting glue on pizza or eating rocks — forced a rapid rollback of certain queries. Google claims to have improved accuracy, but Indian users searching in mixed languages or for region-specific information may still encounter unreliable summaries. A YourStory analysis from September 2024 noted that AI Overviews for Hindi queries occasionally drew from low-quality sources, raising concerns about misinformation.

Additionally, the traffic impact is not uniform. Sites with strong brand recognition — like Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato — may actually see increased visibility because their names appear in the summary’s citation list. Smaller blogs and niche sites, however, risk being squeezed out. The caveat is clear: correlation is not causation, and many variables (core updates, seasonal trends) affect traffic simultaneously.

What Indian Marketers Should Test Next

Instead of reacting broadly, focus on measurable, small experiments:

  • Run a domain audit for pages that currently rank in positions 1–10 for informational queries. Check if they are cited in any AI Overview. Use a rank tracker that flags overview presence.
  • Add `FAQPage` schema to your top 10 most-visited blog posts. Monitor click-through rate changes in Search Console over 30 days.
  • Create one “authoritative guide” page per core topic, structured as a series of questions with detailed answers, internal links to supporting data, and external citations from official Indian sources.
  • Review your traffic for the past 60 days in Google Analytics, segmenting by “organic search” and “landing page”. If you see a drop of more than 15% on a page that previously held a featured snippet, consider rewriting it to be more comprehensive.

AI Overviews are neither a killer nor a gift. They are a structural change to how Google surfaces answers. For Indian marketers who treat this as a signal to improve content quality, authenticity and data depth, the opportunity may outweigh the risk. The next six months will tell.
