A new report from Similarweb has provided the most detailed public look yet at how AI chatbots and traditional search engines coexist — and the picture is far more nuanced than either AI optimists or skeptics would like to admit. The 38-page “2026 Generative AI Landscape: The Evolution of AI Search” report, published in late July, shows that AI search is not replacing Google but layering on top of it, with profound implications for how Indian digital marketers should allocate budgets and measure performance.

Key findings: User overlap and citation rates
Similarweb tracked audience overlap between ChatGPT and Google between March and May 2026. Of ChatGPT’s 494 million users, 461 million — or 95% — also used Google during the same period. Almost nobody has left Google for ChatGPT. Instead, users have added ChatGPT to an existing Google habit that has not budged.

The gap in overall scale remains stark. Search still pulls 3.3 billion average monthly unique visitors worldwide. AI chatbots, even after growing 57% year over year, sit at 655 million. Traditional search remains roughly five times larger than the entire AI chatbot category combined.
Citation rates tell a different part of the story. Only 6.8% of ChatGPT answers in the U.S. included a link to an external source as of May 2026. The average monthly web visits across generative AI platforms hit 9.5 billion between June 2025 and May 2026, up 70% year over year. App downloads worldwide climbed to 2.7 billion, up 134%. Half of all generative AI users are now 35 or older, compared to 61% under 34 just two years ago — a signal that adoption is spreading beyond the early adopter demographic.
Meta AI’s own disclosed numbers reinforce this trend, with monthly active users tripling from 384 million in September 2024 to 1.2 billion by March 2026, entirely by riding inside existing apps like Instagram and WhatsApp rather than as a standalone destination. In India, where WhatsApp and Instagram have massive penetration, this could mean that AI interactions are happening inside platforms users already visit daily, without them even realising they are using a generative AI tool.
However, the report also warns that AI visibility is heavily category-specific. Similarweb’s brand visibility index shows that CeraVe leads the beauty category at an index of 100 while NYX Cosmetics sits at 19 in the same category. Indian marketers should not assume uniform AI visibility across sectors; they need to measure their own category’s share of voice.
Referral traffic: cited pages vs clicked pages
One of the most eye-opening data points comes from SEO consultant Aleyda Solis, who analysed the URLs that ChatGPT cites. She found that 65% of the cited URLs sit two or three folders deep — the pages doing the actual evidentiary work behind an AI answer. But 58.8% of the referral traffic that AI sends back to sites lands on the homepage, not the cited page at all.
This means that cited pages and clicked pages are almost entirely different populations of URLs. For Indian agencies and in-house teams, this finding should prompt a rethink of how AI performance is reported. Tracking only whether deep product or blog content gets cited misses the fact that the humans who actually click through are landing on the homepage and need their own conversion path there.
The report suggests splitting reporting into two separate metrics: citation rate and citation folder depth as one KPI (measuring whether AI trusts the content as evidence), and referral landing pages and downstream conversion as a completely separate KPI (measuring what happens once a human clicks through). Conflating the two in a single dashboard can hide problems on both sides.
Actionable steps for Indian marketers
The report offers three concrete recommendations that Indian digital marketers can apply immediately:
First, stop treating “AI visibility” as a single category. The data shows that the playing field is uneven across industries. Marketers should pull their own category’s leaderboard from Similarweb or comparable tools before assuming they are winning or losing.
Second, match content to the platform’s actual audience, not the platform’s overall size. The affinity data shows ChatGPT skews toward everyday consumers researching restaurants, health, and fashion; Claude users are 25 times more likely than the average searcher to visit university sites and skew heavily toward professionals and students; and Gemini users over-index on technical and coding queries. Indian brands should tailor their content strategy accordingly.
Third, measure downstream behaviour, not just surface impressions. As Rand Fishkin notes in the report, this is analogous to how 20th-century advertisers proved billboard and radio spend worked by measuring lift in store visits, not by counting who glanced at the sign. The mechanism has changed, but the discipline of tracking what happens after the click has not.
