Google Data Reveals Which Life Problems People Bring to AI — and Which They Don’t

Google has published a detailed look at how people use its AI tools outside of work, comparing 14.65 million Gemini app, AI Mode, and Gemini API interactions against the official American Time Use Survey. The report, called AI & Economy ATLAS, reveals where AI conversations are far more frequent than the time people actually spend on those activities — and where the reverse is true.
The data covers US non-work conversations from April 6–19, 2026, and offers a rare window into the topics that drive AI queries. The largest gaps in favour of AI conversations
Government services and civic obligations — such as licences, taxes, fines, and voting — top the list with a gap of nearly twenty to one. That means people ask Google’s AI about these topics roughly twenty times more often than they actually spend time on them. Professional and personal care services (doctors, lawyers, banks, salons) follow at more than seven to one. Education comes next at nearly six to one, and consumer purchases at about three to one.
Health, money, legal, and shopping questions all sit on the high side of the gap. Google classifies these as “high-friction” topics — about half of these queries came in outside standard working hours, at night, early morning, or on weekends. The report cannot say what would have happened without Google’s AI: a licensing question at eleven at night might have become a normal search the next morning, or might have gone unanswered.
Where daily life dominates AI conversations
The gap flips for activities that involve physical presence or routine. Americans spend about eighteen times more of their day eating and drinking than those subjects come up in AI conversations. Travel, sports, caring for household members, watching TV, washing and dressing, cleaning, and making food all sit at the bottom. People spend far more time on these activities than they bring them to Google’s AI.
None of this means those topics are unimportant. Socialising and leisure still generate the most AI conversations overall. The gaps simply highlight where the pattern is most noticeably interrupted — and where the AI is filling a need that traditional search may not.
What this means for Indian marketers and content creators
While the data is US-specific, several trends are likely relevant for Indian audiences. The high-friction topics — government paperwork, health, legal, financial services, and shopping — are areas where Indian users also face complexity, limited access, or after-hours need. Content that addresses these pain points, especially in a question-answering format, may perform well in AI-driven search surfaces.
The report also shows that topics like cooking, home maintenance, and entertainment generate far fewer AI queries relative to their daily time share. This suggests that users still rely on other sources — video, forums, or physical routines — for these activities. For Indian SEO teams, the takeaway is that AI Mode and Gemini app data are not a perfect proxy for all search intent; contextual and visual queries may still live outside the AI conversation log.
Limitations to note
The ATLAS report covers conversations inside Google’s own products only, with no click data. It cannot measure whether any of these queries led to website visits, purchases, or conversions. Google itself notes that the time-use survey and AI conversations are measured differently, so the comparisons are directional, not precise.
