A new report from Nielsen shows that advertising spend on women’s sports has increased 120% since 2022, driven by a sustained rise in viewership and growing commercial interest. The report, titled ‘More Fans, More Often: The Commercial & Cultural Evolution of Women & Sports’, analyses audience, media and commercial trends around women’s sports in the United States.

According to the data, women’s sports attracted 28.6 billion minutes of viewing during the first six months of 2026, an 18% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The report also found that 122.5 million Americans — 52.8% of the total U.S. population — now identify as active participants in the women’s sports ecosystem, meaning they watch, attend or follow women’s sports regularly.

Por que importa

Sponsor valuations rise across major leagues
Sponsor valuations have increased significantly across key women’s sports properties. The report notes a 71% rise for the WNBA, an 82% increase for the NWSL and a 51% gain for the LPGA. These figures reflect growing advertiser confidence and a broader shift in how brands allocate sports marketing budgets.

Charlene Polite Corley, Vice President, Inclusive Insights at Nielsen, said: “The rise in popularity of women’s sports isn’t just a fleeting trend; it is a cultural realignment where access to games, storytelling around athletes and ongoing investment from brands are changing the economy and energy of global sports.”

Brand loyalty shifts among women’s sports fans
The report highlights a notable pattern in consumer behaviour: 60% of women’s sports fans have switched brands they buy based on a company’s values or actions, compared to 45% of sports fans overall. This indicates that advertisers in this space may need to align brand messaging with social and cultural values to retain audience trust.

Women drive new fan growth across men’s leagues too
Nielsen estimates that women account for 9 million of an estimated 16 million new sports fans overall. This female-led growth has also contributed to audience increases across major men’s sports leagues: the NFL saw a 54% rise in new female fans, MLB gained 50%, and the NBA added 45%. Between 2024 and 2026, female viewership grew 55% for the NBA and 44% for the NHL.

U.S. adults in women’s sports ecosystem 8%

What this means for Indian marketers and brands
For Indian digital marketers and brand strategists, the report offers a clear signal: women’s sports is no longer a niche segment but a mainstream audience channel with measurable commercial returns. As viewership grows and sponsor valuations rise, brands in India — particularly those active in the WPL, Pro Kabaddi League, or women’s football — may find similar opportunities to build long-term loyalty by investing in women’s sports properties. The data on brand-switching behaviour also suggests that authenticity and value alignment matter more to this audience than generic sponsorship.
